Trans Fatty Acid
Statistics show that Americans eat 12 to 14 percent of their calories in the form of saturated fat; and as much as 30 percent in the form of trans fatty acids. That's way over health guidelines that suggest your goal should be a combined maximum intake of 10 percent of total calories! The good news is that the food industry is responding to the danger posed by trans fatty acids by putting them in fewer products. You can take it to the next level by following a few simple rules:- Choose lean, protein-rich foods such as soy, fish, skinless chicken, and fat-free or 1% dairy products.
- Eat foods that are naturally low in fat -- whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
- Eat foods rich in soluble fiber -- oats, bran, dry peas, beans, cereal, and rice.
- Check out food labels and avoid foods high in saturated fat. Keep away from foods with "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" fats!
