The Superfood Rainbow

Superfoods are natural foods that are calorie sparse and nutrient dense. They are considered the best sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients... and they are super! These foods are powerful enough to help lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and even improve your mood. And they're great for weight control! They're not exotic or rare, in fact, they're easily found in your neighborhood supermarket. Plus, they look beautiful on the plate!
  • Red superfoods contain lycopene which is believed to help in fighting lung and prostate cancers. Red superfood includes pink grapefruit, red bell peppers, tomatoes, raspberries, cherries, and watermelon.
  • Purple superfoods are richin anthocyanins, which ward off heart disease, prevent blood clot formation and may lower the risk of cancer. Add concord grapes, blueberries, prunes, and acai berries to your diet to take advantage of these benefits!
  • Green superfoods offer multiple protections. They contain lutein, which reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease while guarding against age-related macular degeneration. They're also rich in folate, an added protection against heart disease. Recently studies show that the the phytochemical sulforapane found in green superfoods detoxifies cancer-causing chemicals before they cause damage to the body. The stars of this group are spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and collard greens.
  • Orange superfoods are packed with beta carotenes that may prevent cancer, particularly of the lung, esophagus and stomach, lower the risk of heart disease and improve immune function. Carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, pumpkin, and oranges are in this delicious group.
  • White superfoods contain anthoxanthins and allicin, which can help lower blood pressure and protect against stomach cancer. Add cauliflower, mushrooms, and onions to your favorite recipes and top your breakfast cereal with banana slices to add these favorites to your daily nutritional regimen.
For a special treat, finish off your meal with some dark chocolate made with organic cacao. Cacao beans are considered to be a natural anti-depressant. They contain three neurotransmitters that are associated with promoting a  positive mental state: serotonin, dopamine and phenylethylamine. Cacao beans also contain the amino acid tryptophan and monoamine oxidase inhibitors which allow the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine to circulate in the bloodstream longer, and may help alleviate depression and while promoting a feeling of well being. Add these powerhouses to your daily diet and you'll get some super results!
