Seeing into the Future
Almost 1 million Americans over the age of 40 are considered legally blind. Another 2.4 million have significantly reduced vision. The four eye disorders that pose the greatest risk of vision problems as you age are cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
A study published in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people with the diets highest on the glycemic index were the most likely to have advanced age-related macular degeneration in at least one eye. Researchers estimate that a fifth of the cases in this study might have been prevented by eating fewer high-sugar foods. Another recent study found people with diabetes who kept their blood sugar at near normal levels cut their risk of developing eye disease by 75%!
