Cross Training for Older Americans

Recently, a 67 year old senior asked me if lifting weights on top of doing water aerobics 3 times a week would be okay. My response: you're never too old to reap the benefits of weight training. Recent studies show that men averaging 69 years old and women 68 gained strength and muscle after two months of weight training. Three times a week the seniors would do knee extensions as well. The men gained 27 percent more muscle in their quadriceps while women had an impressive 29 percent gain! So, grab a barbell and lift! Remember to pay attention to warning signs! If dizziness, nausea, weakness, shortness of breath or chest pains occur, stop exercising and see a doctor.
