Are eggs all they're cracked up to be?
The average-size egg contains around 70 to 75 calories and has six grams of protein, the building block of muscle. Sounds good, so far! Not so fast, it also has 6 grams of artery clogging fat, plus 300 milligrams of cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends that most people consume a maximum 300 milligrams of cholesterol each day. This average egg also contains 300 milligrams of sodium!
You don't have to give up this great source of protein, because there is a sunny side to this picture. If you break an egg in half and cook just the egg white, you'll notice there is a dramatic nutritional difference. The white part of the egg has only 3 grams of protein but it also has zero fat, zero cholesterol and just a few milligrams of sodium.
So the next time you want an excellent source of protein, crack a couple of eggs and have an egg white omelet.
