Your Glycemic index
If you have a family history of diabetes, it's particularly important that you take steps to avoid developing this dangerous health condition. There are two words you want to understand -- glycemic index.
Scientists use the glycemic index to measure how much and how fast a certain food raises blood sugar levels. Things like whole wheat bread, pasta, beans, and vegetables are low glycemic food sources. The high glycemic foods such as, white rice, white bread and many processed foods can trigger a potentially dangerous amount of insulin release. High insulin levels and insulin resistance can cause serious conditions like diabetes, heart attack, and high blood pressure. Researchers found that mice fed high glycemic foods gained twice as much weight even though the calorie count was about the same as their low glycemic counterparts!
Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to find out which foods you should be avoiding.
