Prebiotics or Probiotics?
Both prebiotics and probiotics are in health news these days. What is the difference?
- Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates that boost the growth and activity of beneficial micro-organisms - probiotics - in the gut. They are found naturally in oats, wheat, some fruits and vegetables.
- Probiotics are live micro-organisms which offer health benefits, especially for infection-caused diarrhea, inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome to asthma, allergy and Type 1 diabetes. These micro-organisms reside in the stomach, the lower part of the small intestine and the large intestine.
Probiotics are important and beneficial against many health issues. However, they may be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, so check with your health profession if you have any questions!
