Diabetes
Do you have a family history of type 1 diabetes? You can cut your and your children's risk of developing the disease.- Add some fish to your diet. Researchers studied almost 2 thousand children at risk of diabetes. They found those who ate a diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids were less likely to develop diabetes. Experts believe that omega 3's can interfere with enzymes that play a role in inflammation, a trigger for type 1 diabetes. Omega 3's are found in fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts and soybeans.
- Researchers studied more than 8 thousand men who had normal blood sugar levels. They found the more walking the men did, the lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In fact, the men who walked for at least 21 minutes a day were one quarter less likely to develop diabetes than those who walked only 10 minutes. Experts believe regular walking may directly lower the risk of diabetes by improving the body's sensitivity to insulin.
