Building Strong Bones

Keep your running shoes available year-round to improve and maintain bone density! The body lays down new bone at maximum stress points and removes it where there is little stress. A good example is when you put your arm in a cast and the bones lose  density. When you stress bones, they thicken! Researchers measured bone density in runners, cyclists, and an inactive control group. They found that runners had higher bone density than the other groups -- especially in the legs. On the other hand, cyclists had a lower bone density in the spine. The reason is that cyclists don't bear weight on their skeletons, they are supported by bikes during a workout. Anyone trying to build bone density should include jogging as part of their  fitness regimen.
